What to Expect When You’re Expecting Review
Wed, May 18, 2011‘What to Expect When You’re Expecting’ is a book I dipped into a lot when I was pregnant with Euan. I often referred to it when experiencing some of the minor ailments which surfaced during my pregnancy. It was reassuring to know that I was not the only one suffering from some of the less romantic aspects of pregnancy!
As it happens I’m actually re-reading it just now. Baby 2 due late September…
‘What to Expect When You’re Expecting’ is comprehensive and practical and provides every pregnant woman with all the information she could ever require.
The month by month format makes it an easy reference book to use. The extensive index is something you might expect from an academic or medical textbook but the content is much more accesible than this – it’s a bit like having a friendly midwife on your bookshelf!
The occasional use of illustrations helped me to visualise how my baby was growing and how to keep well.
While some of the advice is only relevant to the American market (e.g. ‘Choosing a Paediatrician’) all pregnant women would find most of the content extremely useful. I would agree with Charles Lockwood’s comment that this book is like having your own ‘personal obstetrician.’

It was a long time ago, but I loved that book when I was pregnant too. Good luck!
