Review of Sound Touch iphone App for Kids

Sat, Dec 10, 2011

Do you remember the games you used to play with siblings whilst on long car journeys? These days I’m still a fan of the old favourites (singing, looking out for different colours of cars etc) but my toddler is definitely of a new generation and I often use technology to keep him amused.

A friend recently recommended the ‘Sound Touch‘ App for toddlers. It has been designed by parents for toddlers and young kids. It’s simple to use and Euan happily plays with it himself. He could play with this app for ages, in fact sometimes it’s hard to persuade him that my phone is not just another one of his toys, I should get to use it sometimes too!

The app has 6 pages, each with a different theme – farmyard animals; safari animals; birds; vehicles; musical instruments and household items. On each page is 12 brightly coloured animated pictures and when your child taps one of the pictures one of 5 photos comes up and the associated sound can be heard. There are 180 images and sounds in total so while this app is great fun for kids it’s also a useful learning tool.

Is there a downside? Some of the noises can be a little annoying (the household items in particular – think washing machines and breaking plates) but Euan loves it and if I give it to him to play with in the car I can hear what he’s doing and he is fully entertained.
