Packing List for Travelling with a Baby
Fri, Jul 16, 2010A lot of what you pack will depend on the type of travelling you are doing. If you are hopping on a plane and going to a hotel for a week then you probably won’t have to worry about a travel cot, for instance. This is a list of things I take when taking my baby on a trip in the car.
Clothing:
- 2 summer rompers or vests/onesises per day. Choose ones that can be worn during the day or at night.
- At least 2 sunhats.
- Travel wash.
Feeding:
- Milton Tablets.
- Sterilsing bucket/bath.
- Bibs.
- Cool bag.
- Milk fed babies:
- Bottles, teats etc. Even if your baby is breast fed it is worth while taking one bottle/cup so that you can offer your baby water, especially if he/she is weaned.
- Breast pump and storage bags/boxes if you are expressing.
- Weaned babies (unless you’re going for baby led weaning):
- A bowl and spoon (if your baby is weaned) and fork to mash fresh fruit and veg.
- Jars for the first few days, you should be able to find good ones in supermarkets abroad after that.
Sleeping:
- Travel cot and sheet.
- Mosquito net for the travel cot.
- Summer sleeping bag (0.5 or 1 tog).
- Cellular blanket.
- Portable black out blind.
Entertainment:
- A selection of your baby’s favourite toys.
- Car seat mobile.
- Flat pack bouncy chair (I love our Baby Bjorn Baby Sitter).
Other Essentials:
- 50+ Sun block.
- Nappies/diapers and cream (of course you can buy these on your travels but it’s worth taking at least enough for a couple of days).
- Muslin squares.
- Buggy/stroller
- Baby nail clippers (their little nails will grow faster in the sun).
- Dummies/pacifiers (if your baby uses one!)
- First aid kit
- A fan. We just use a hand one but the battery operated ones are great too.

Hey Anna – here’s a few of the other things we took away with us on our first family holiday:
Sling/papoose – great if you’re taking shuttles/buses/taxis and don’t have your car seat (strap seat belt on to you and wear baby in sling) and for when the airline refuses to bring your buggy to the aircraft and you have to walk miles before waiting in a long queue at passport control with a wriggly baby!
Lightweight/spare buggy – airlines can be rough on your expensive buggy; get hold of a spare, lightweight one (borrow, gumtree etc) for travelling and make sure it’s easy to put up and down.
Bananas! – perfect food for mashing up on a plane for newly weaned babies or whole for bigger ones.
Katy and Millie, 7 months
Thanks Katy, great tips! I like the idea of a lightweight buggy. I’m on the search for one that is lightweight but will also work well off road…
Happy travelling!
