Mushroom Foraging in Perthshire
Fri, Oct 15, 2010In August Arran, Euan and I went foraging for mushrooms with our good friend (and guide) Andi Wilson of Different Breid. We had a great walk in the forest, plenty of fresh air, and came home with a huge basket of chantarelles.
Euan was quite comfy in his sling while choosing the best mushrooms with Dad.
I was taking the job very seriously!
Andi’s treasure.
Andi surprised us with tea and baking after our walk. He’s a baker so the blueberry scones were amazing!
Andi thought of everything, he even brought a camping chair!
There are more of Arran’s photos of our walk in the woods on his website and have a look at Delicious Baby for more Photo Friday submissions.

great storytelling and humour in your shots, thank you. not for nothing is Perthshire called Big Tree Country.

Thanks Kerry. Slightly embarrassed to admit that I didn’t know Perthshire was called that although I can see why!
That is a great picture of your son and husband. They both look perfectly content! Those scones look delicious!

Thanks Jen, I love that picture and the scones were supreme!
I’m guessing your guide was there to tell you which ones were poisonous and which weren’t? Every time I think about foraging for anything, I envision the way that the character in Into the Wild died! Morbid, I know.

Camels & Chocolate: I was reading your comment on poisonous mushrooms and totally thought of Into the Wild too. Read the book awhile ago, but just watched the movie for the first time last week.

Yes, thankfully he knows a lot about mushrooms! My husband is half Finnish too and used to go foraging a lot when we was a little boy so he knows a bit too.
Into the Wild – what a great story.
That looks like a class day out with Andy, the Gourmand! I wish we could have been there!!
It was a lovely day. Your boys would have loved it, Wendy.

They’re great aren’t they? Was thinking of trying a wrap style sling if we’re lucky enough to have another baby because I’ve heard they’re even better, apparently they distribute the weight across your back more evenly.
gorgeous! i love your tesco bag – got one like it last month in scotland. what a lovely afternoon.

Hehe! You spotted the Tesco bag!
I love your son’s facial expression in that first picture. He’s looking at those mushrooms like, “OK…this is different. Hmmmm…” So cute!

You should definitely go some day Dominique, it’s a great way to spend time outdoors. Just make sure you take someone who knows about mushrooms!
Great pictures. I admit I miss “fall” in the northern hemisphere.

We are in Perthshire on holiday now and desperately need to find a good place for mushroom hunting. We are near Killin. Have you a recommendation?
Hi Jon,
How lovely, hope you are having a good time. We always go for a mature broad leaf forest when looking for mushrooms. There are quite a few in the Killin area to choose from and they’d all be worth a try. Mushrooms seem to sprout just where a forest ends and a new type of ground begins or there is some type of barrier such as a wall or a road. Hope this helps. Good luck!
Anna
Thanks Anna. Much appreciated.
