London is one of the world’s megacities. With over 12 million official inhabitants (and a real figure more like 16 million), plus more than a millennium of history, it is one of the most significant urban areas on the planet. So how can you negotiate your way through such a city – and keep the kids happy?
Here are a few helpful hints to London with family baggage…
1. Book a central hotel
There are fantastic deals on central Kensington hotels from international hotelier group Millennium Hotels. Located a stone’s throw from the expansive Hyde Park and Natural History Museums – the former perfect for a wander, the latter ideal for curious kids.
2. Buy a London Pass
If you’re looking to pack in attractions such as the London Eye, Madame Tussauds and the major museums in South Kensington, then it is well worth your while investing in a London Pass. This allows discounts into the city’s main attractions – and can be purchased as a family pass.
3. Master the underground
Taxis in London are expensive, and often end up taking longer than a walk. Taking the underground is cheaper and an adventure for the kids – avoid rush hour (7.30-9.00am and 5.00-6.30pm) and you’ll be fine.
4. Visit the Museum of Childhood
Located just outside Bethnal Green tube station, the V&A’s Museum of Childhood will be a big hit: it’s made for kids, and their activities and exhibitions are infectiously good.
5. Do War Horse – the show and the real story
The theatre adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s novel is still a huge hit in London and on Broadway; make sure to book tickets to see it and then take the kids to the National Army Museum’s exhibition exploring the real-life story behind the show.
6. Be dazzled by puppets
Acclaimed theatre company Kneehigh brings A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings to the Little Angel Theatre from November 19th. It looks set to spark imaginations young and old…
